“From the ashes, we will rise”

The owners of El Grifo Bodega, the oldest winery in the Canary Islands, are hosting an exclusive immersive experience for fifty of the World’s leading wine experts.

They would love to brand a wine bottle that brings to life the unique history and cultivation of the Malvasía Volcanicá grape variety, grown in the aftermath of the Timanfaya Volcanic Eruption of 1730.

Ask:
Inspire the audience with the inhabitant’s determination to persevere in the face of adversity.

Solution:
1. Concept 1: The Incomplete Picture.

Just like the inhabitants had to recreate their picture of life after the eruption, we also will have new challenges that will shape our own. Our picture is never complete.

All images and the wine bottle have gold circles cut out of them, symbolising an incomplete picture.

The message is that with perseverance, determination and hard work, we can uncover something beautiful.

2. Concept 2: From the ashes, we will rise.

From barren, arid land the inhabitants created something beautiful. Inspired the structural design.

3. Text runs along the bottom of the page, imitating the unique architecture of the vineyard and the low-lying grapevines.

Bottle Wrapping:

The history of the grape variety inspired the structural design.

From the outside, only ashy grey wrapping can be seen, signifying the barren landscape left by the volcanic eruption.

By burning the paper away we find the wine bottle, a possession of value.

This plays into the second concept: “from the ashes, we rise”

 

Bottle

Label: The label includes a cut-out circle, playing with the concept of “the incomplete picture.” The consumer can see through this to the wine inside.

The wine bottle has gold flakes in it, signifying a possession of value.

Seal: The decoration around the seal is a depiction of the semi-circular formation of rocks around each grapevine.
